State Rep. Tami L. Gouveia releases statement on Dec. 31 Speaker vote:
“After several weeks of deep reflection and many meaningful conversations with constituents on the values and issues that are most important to the residents of my district in selecting the next Speaker of the House of Representatives, I concluded that I could not, in my heart and in good conscience, cast a vote for Rep. Ron Mariano at this time. While Speaker Mariano has dedicated his career to serving the people of Massachusetts in various capacities, I believe that the residents of my district and across the state deserve, and are demanding, an open process and new leadership that represents the values, identities and priorities of voters across our state. The majority of my constituents seek a state government that is accountable and transparent and that passes bold policies to address the climate crisis, housing emergency and staggering economic inequality in our state that has only worsened during the pandemic. Ahead of today’s vote, I did not have the opportunity to talk with Speaker Mariano about his priorities and approach to the leadership position, therefore I do not have ample evidence that Speaker Mariano would be the bold leader that my constituents expect and our state needs during this perilous time.
